Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, Some Point Vaguely 20 Years in THE FUTURE, Friday Afternoon
Bobby, along with several other members of the Xavier Institute's staff, had been fielding phone calls from frantic parents for what seemed like forever.
"My name's Robert Drake, Mr and Mrs Kincaid," he introduced himself. A slight pause as he listened to whatever the people on the other end had to say. "No sir. Cecily's one of the rare exceptions. She still possesses her powe- they hung up," he said dully. "For god's sake, Scott, don't they even care?"
"Apparently not," Scott Summers said flatly. "How're you holding up, Bobby?" he asked.
"The truth? Working these phones, dealing with other people's grief, it's about the only thing keeping me sane right now, considering I'm in the same boat."
"Yes, Robert, about that, perhaps you could-" Bobby held up a hand to forestall the rest of Emma's statement as another call came through on his headset. Another parent, demanding to know why their kid was, in their words, "still a freak".
"He's not a freak, none of us are freaks!" Bobby spat. "D'you have the slightest clue what he's going through? What his best friends are going through? You might try sparing a little empathy for your son instead of complaining about how much trouble it causes you." This time it was Bobby's turn to hang up, even if hitting 'end call' on the controls to his headset was somewhat less viscerally satisfying than slamming an actual phone down.
"-take a few days off and go to the reunion that quaint little high school of yours and Sookie's is organizing," Emma finished smoothly, as if she hadn't been interrupted at all.
"Why?" Bobby said, immediately suspicious. "You trying to get rid of me too, like you did Dani? Now that I'm not a mutant anymore?" How dare she! This was his home, had been his home longer than anyone else here bar Scott, she had no right to ask him to leave...
"Bobby, no," Scott tried to interject and smooth things over, but Emma just rolled her eyes.
"Don't be ridiculous," she said. "Your wife still has her powers, as do your children. The safest place for them is here, and I would not break up a family." Plus she had a little bit of a soft spot for one Robert Drake, though you'd be hard-pressed to get her to admit to that one. "I'm simply suggesting a little vacation to get you out of the thick of things for the time being."
As much as the idea of going back to Fandom and having to pretend everything was just fine didn't seem like the most fun ever, Bobby had to admit that there was maybe some merit in a distraction that didn't provoke in him the desire to smash things every time someone opened their mouth.
"Excellent," Emma said smugly, deducing (correctly, of course) that the little hamster on a wheel that was Bobby's brain had seen her point. "I've let Sookie know already. She's making the portal arrangements."
Of course she had. Telepaths. Sigh.
[ooc: Some dialogue taken from Decimation: The Day After. Establishy and NFB due to being in THE FUTURE. Yes, people are starting to do establishy wakeup posts and I do an establishy leaving post. I like being different, so sue me.]
